Homework Policy for Ms. Costello’s Class

Please make homework a top priority by scheduling approximately 45-60 minutes each day for your child to complete their assignments.  Try to have your child work in a neat, clutter free, and quiet environment.  Remember structure and routine are important when scheduling “homework time.”

Homework is a reinforcement or continuation of what is being done in class and helps prepare students for upcoming lessons and tests.  It will not be “busy work.”  Homework is also important because it teaches your child to be responsible and helps them develop good study habits.

·        Agenda-

o       Each student is responsible for writing in their agendas on a daily basis, copying exactly what I have on the board.

o       Writing in his/her agenda is not an option.  Agendas are checked daily.

·         Monday thru Thursday-

o       Sometimes they will have long term-projects that might need to be completed at home.

    • 20 minutes of reading every night.  You need to sign their           agenda every night after they have completed their reading.
    • Spelling homework every night.  In the spelling notebook on Monday and Tuesdays complete one activity each night using 10 words.  Wednesday and Thursdays choose two more activities using twenty words each night.  Try to use a different activity each night.  Friday the children will be tested.
    • Everyday Math every night.  I send home a “family letter” at the beginning of each unit explaining what we are studying and providing a homework answer guide.
    • Have your child try it on their own before giving them help.
    • Please do not do it for them.
    • If your child has a lot of trouble with homework, send a note and I will make time to help him/her with it.
    • The assignments are written on the white board each day and they are given ample time to write them into their notebook.
    • I will always go over each assignment and remind students of what they need to bring home.  I also give opportunities to ask questions.
    • Often Unfinished in-class work will be sent home to complete.

·        Assignments may be collected and graded.

o       Homework is checked everyday and checked off.

o       If a student does not have an assignment on the day it is due, he/she can pass it in by the end of the next school day to earn half credit for the assignment.

o       No credit will be given after this time has passed.

o       If this occurs more than once a week, I will call you to work out a plan.

o       If a student is absent, he/she has the number of days absent to make up the work.  If a student is absent for an extended period of time, other arrangements may be made.  At the end of the term, all checked homework assignments will be added up and a grade will be given for homework.
