Fourth
Grade Curriculum
The Massachusetts Curriculum
Frameworks is the foundation for the 4th grade program.
It is important that the curriculum be presented
in multiple formats that include whole class instruction, small group, paired learning
as well as individual tutorials as needed.
Striving for a safe, fun, cooperative and respectful
learning environment will encourage students to take learning risks, motivate them
to try their best and value their own input and contributions to the class.
A team approach as well as parent participation is a vital part of this process.
Your thoughts, ideas, suggestions and help are always welcome.
Reading/English/Language Arts/
Writing:
Our new program, Literacy
by Design, encompasses all aspects of reading writing: fluency, comprehension, decoding,
vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and paragraph/sentence composition. In the classroom, we will
learn parts of speech, mechanics of writing, forms of writing (or genre), composition
and the writing process, as well as various
types of writing,
and the editing process.
Recounts, letters, reports, narratives, and expositions
will be reviewed.
In reading, students will have thirty minutes of whole
class instruction each day, followed by (rotating) small group instruction each
day.
This year, Mrs. Nelson
will be teaching
Writing Techniques to the fourth grade classes.
Writing Techniques includes topics such as parts of speech, correct word usage,
sentence structure, sentence types, expanding their writing and poetry.
The goal of this subject is to make writing assignments clearer and more creative.
Our class sees Mrs. Nelson on Wednesday and Thursday, from
1:10 – 1:50.
