Bee Talks about Bee

Did you know? To make 1 pound of honey, the bees have to fly, collectively, the distance of 2 times around the earth?  Wow!

A chemist by profession, Birgit became fascinated with beekeeping more than a decade ago when a friend gave her a jar of honey produced by bees from her own hives. Ever the scientist, Birgit studied every aspect of the honeybee and began producing her own honey for family and friends …

Birgit de Weerd is committed to expanding the understanding of, the respect for and the importance of honeybees in our environment. Birgit will share her substantial knowledge while demonstrating to Centerville’s third graders the social interactions of honeybees, pollen and nectar collection activities, honey productions and the evolution of beekeeping from medieval times to the 21st century bringing posters, beekeeping equipment, a beehive & insect samples. Special emphasis is put on the difference between wasps and bees and how to behave in their presence. A taste of honey and ideas for follow-up activities provided. Birgit's enthusiasm is contagious! She has developed a well-earned reputation as a delightful speaker in the Boston area.
