Curriculum Night Letter:
Good Evening! Thank You for coming! The following is a brief summary of the third
grade curriculum at Centerville Elementary School. Our work is aligned with the Massachusetts State Frameworks and will prepare the students for MCAS testing.
PENMANSHIP- Each morning the children practice handwriting by writing
information using the dictionary, discussing the schedule, and charting the weather.
We also practice cursive handwriting throughout the year.
READING- Using the Rigby Literacy Series, as well as chapter books,
students will explore vocabulary words, dictionary skills, comprehension, and writing
skills. We will share information orally as a class and in small Literature Circle groups.
LANGUAGE ARTS- Through the Rigby Literacy Series, Wilson Fundations, and
First Steps reading, writing, and spelling curriculum students will be involved
in activities to enrich their language skills. Students use graphic organizers to
format and plan their writing. Students draft, edit, revise, and publish their own
stories.
MATHEMATICS- The Everyday Mathematics program is implemented in our
classroom. Students use manipulatives such as unifix cubes, graphing charts, place
value mats, individual white boards, calculators, and computer programs.
SCIENCE- Science and Technology for Children Kits- Plant Growth
and Development, Chemical Tests, and Rocks and Minerals, Planets and the Universe
are the topics this year. Students will be involved in hands-on activities and investigation
through research, experimentation, data collection, and journals.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Our home state of Massachusetts, as well as the city of
Beverly, will be focused on as we explore geographic terms, the first Americans,
settling the land, and the United States today. Students will learn how to research
information and present their project.
COMPUTER/LIBRARY- Students will practice typing skills, learn the proper
use of the internet for research, and how to utilize library resources.
HOMEWORK- Assignments will be given daily, Monday-Thursday, and recorded
in agenda notebooks. At Home Reading will be 30 minutes each night. Math and Spelling assignments
will vary 10 to 15 minutes per assignment. Science and Social Studies projects may
be assigned periodically.
GRAND FRIENDS PROGRAM- In my bi-weekly spring program,
senior citizen volunteers from Beverly Hospital come to walk and talk with students. For over a decade, Beverly
Hospital’s Volunteer dept. has coordinated this intergenerational
community service-learning program. The children write about their discussions after
we finish a 30 minute walk around the neighborhood. The program has been a huge
success and I would like to continue it this spring. Let’s join our efforts to ensure a productive
and successful year!
Sincerely, Rosemary Bane Bogan
